TWO Good Free Apps of the Day: Niko and Fit Brains for Kids

Some days I see tumbleweed in the app store when I'm looking for a Good Free App of the Day to share with everyone, but today was not one of them! I have two fabulous apps for you — one for older kids (Niko and the Sword of Light) and the other for the younger kids (Fit Brains for Kids). Commence squeals of happiness!

Fitbrainthumb The first freebie I have for you is Fit Brains for Kids: Sparky's Adventures with learning that adjusts to each user's abilities. Engaging music, adorable character, reward system and data tracking in a separate parent section make this a great intro to the Fit Brains program. Designed by award-winning neuroscientist Dr. Paul Nussbaum, this app comes with six lessons in the free version with options to upgrade for one year, lifetime or family lifetime.

Fitbrain1Fit Brains: Sparky's Adventures offers a first-of-its-kind cognitive approach to child learning and development. The app provides a fun and healthy collection of brain games for ages 2 to 8, designed to stimulate the 5 key areas of the brain and automatically adapt to the needs of each child.

Fit Brains is designed by Dr. Paul Nussbaum, an award-winning
Fitbrain2neuroscientist. Fit Brains apps have more than 3 million mobile users, have been rated #1 in education in over 80 countries and are regularly used by a variety of public schools, universities, health institutions and top-tier organizations.

Fit Brains: Sparky's Adventures is the best child brain development program for the iPhone & iPad on the market today!

Fitbrain3Cognitive abilities are an important foundation for early childhood education. There is a strong connection between the development a child undergoes early in life and the level of success that the child will experience later in life. Early childhood is a period when the brain has its highest levels of plasticity, which is the brain's ability to form new pathways and structures.

“The [U.S.] Education Department said it would change tests used for admission to public school kindergarten and first-grade classes in order to focus more on cognitive ability and less on school readiness.” – New York Times (Feb, 2013)

Cognitive development begins at birth, so one is never too young to begin challenging and strengthening the brain. This app was designed to be a tool for children, while they are at home or on the go, to play and have fun, while also developing critical skills they will use throughout their lives.

The app's entire library of fun kid's brain games begins at a basic level and adapts in difficulty to match the appropriate level of each child. This allows children to just pick up the app and play, while the app seamlessly adjusts to their optimal skill level. In this way, the app is able to provide both novel and complex stimulation, which is crucial to brain health at any age. This is particularly true for a young brain, because of the rapidly developing brain cells that can assemble into neural networks and provide a foundation for learning.

The app contains a unique "Parents Corner" that offers a variety of tools & charts to view the progress of your child. See how your child is doing in the five major brain areas: Memory, Concentration (Attention), Problem Solving, Speed & Visual. Detailed charts are provided for each brain area, as well as an overall Fit Brains Age Index, which is the age group that your child is currently performing the closest to.

Fit Brains is a scientifically-designed brain fitness program developed by Dr. Paul Nussbaum, one of the top clinical neuropsychologists in the U.S. with more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Nussbaum is an Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

NikothumbnailThis freebie is for the nine and up crowd. Niko and the Sword of Light is an absolutely stunning way to tell a story. This comic book meets gorgously rendered animations, professional narration, character voices and a great theme — Dark versus Light. The developer could have stopped with a simple narrated comic book, but they went well beyond because each cell comes to life while sound effects, animations and voices make this story pull users into the action. The first three chapters are included in the free download, but you and your older kids will probably be just like my family, huddled around the iPad demanding more!

Niko3powerful enough to return his land to freedom…

"Niko and the Sword of Light" is our first fully animated comic book on the iPad. Inspired by a love of comics, movies, and adventure stories, the epic tale of Niko is all three combined into one intense interactive experience. This mythical tale will take you through awe-inspiring landscapes full of wondrous characters and monstrous beasts conceived of by the minds of Imaginism Studios — character designers for Tim Burton's
Niko4Alice in Wonderland (2010) — and the innovative 2D animation house, StudioNX. "Niko and the Sword of Light" truly is the first of its kind and bridges the gap between static comics and animated films.
