ReviewForDev: Wubbzy the Superhero

Screen Shot 2013-04-18 at 8.32.06 PMI’m supposed to write my general impressions of an app for these ReviewForDev features, so I’ll get straight to the point: This is a top-tier app.

The story (about how you can be a superhero by just helping people), graphics, sound and interaction are all way above average. It has two videos and games that work on counting, numbers and shape recognition.

If you’d like to dowloand Wubbzy the Superhero ($1.99, iPad/iPhone) please support smartappsforkids.com by using this link:

The words are highlighted when read and read when touched, a requirement of mine for book apps. It has a Common Core Corner which is becoming all the rage nowadays in App World, a place I made up, and a Parent’s Corner with questions parents/teachers can use to start discussions. Even the price is great ($1.99).

This is a seriously good app. If this were a full review, I’d seriously consider giving it the five stars and we’ve only give 30 apps five stars in three years worth of reviews. It might overstimulate some, so be wary of that, but otherwise I highly recommend.

What I liked
This app is great as it has three reading modes. The Read to Me option has clear narration and reflects the mood of the story as well as highlighting the word as it is read. The Read and Play option allows young readers to read the story to themselves and have the option of a difficult word being given to them when they are struggling. I like the animation and graphics. The story ends with questions that promote discussion between the young reader and adults. There are games and videos that are also entertaining to view and play.
Suggestions
Perhaps in the future, an option would be to have multiple choice questions to test the reading comprehension of the story. Although there are questions at the end of the story to promote discussion about the story, the multiple choice questions abot the story elements would allow the child to test themselves and have immediate feedback on their answers. Also, there could be a game where the events are put in sequential order.
General opinion
I liked this app as it had three modes of reading to scaffold a young reader at their developmental level. The graphics were very fun and clear and the animation along with the music was very entertaining. I especially liked how the story had clear characters, a setting, plot, and had discussion questions at the end. This app was wonderful and I would have my students read it in my classroom.

What I liked
I like that there are 3 modes to this app. As an educator if young children I love the inflection that is used in the reading of this story. It is great for children to be able to hear the story read in this manner. I like that the stars appear in the screen to show you the parts that are interactive.
Suggestions
In the Just the Story mode I wish there was an option were the pages would turn automatically when the page is completed. In the game area, I liked the shape game but wished the hint at the top of the screen could be turned off if the parent/child so desired.
General opinion
This is another great Wubbzy app. I love that the parent area includes the common core areas that are included in this app. This feature is also very beneficial to educator who use this app as a part if their curriculum. The interaction of the pages simply adds to the great story being told. This app is definitely one I would recommend to my fellow educators as well as the the parents if my students.

Love this app! it has sooo much to offer for the price. The words highlight as the words are read in the read to me option and then you can play on each page. I love that the areas on each page that are animated will sparkle with stars to show the kids where to touch. this app has three ways to read the book. raed to me, book ply and read and play which offers great options. I love the book only for introducing a book. the kids are not distracted by what theoy can do and listen to the story. This app also offers games and videos that all teach something!!!!
Suggestions
I would like to see a version of the book where the book is read to the kids and they can play once the reading is done. The current verion allows kids to touch and play while the book is being read to them and so,e kids cannot handle this as it is too distracting for them and they miss the whole story.
General opinion
I love this app and would only make one change as listed above. his book teaches kids that there are all kinds of heroes and that everyone can be a hero! it also has great videos and games. Every activity has an educational function but is interesting enough to keep the kids engaged in learning!

I love everything about this app! It is colorful and interactive. I like the 3 different ways to explore the book so it can be used for different ages and even during quiet reading time. I love the forward and back arrows, sound effects, and games. The feature to control the volume of the music, sounds, and voice is perfect! Personally, I want to make sure that my students can hear the story even though they may be touching everything in the picture. The added feature of entering the year of birth is a great way to control access to the store.

I cannot think of any improvements. I look forward to seeing more Wubbzy apps/stories in the future!
I do not like to pay for apps since there are so many good, free ones available, but I do understand the charge for this one. It is definitely worth $1.99.
General opinion
All of the Wubbzy apps are fantastic and Wubbzy the Superhero is no different. I even think it is an improvement from Wubbzy and the Fire Engine. The story is great, captures kids’ attention, and has a good message. The app is very interactive and has so many options and features! This app can definitely keep a kid (ages 3-10) interested for a while. The games included are fun as well as educational, and there is a little bonus info for parents.

Who doesn’t love Wubbzy? Wubbzy is a ver popular character with preschoolers and for kids at the beginning of kindergarten. I love that the app has a story, games, and videos all wrapped into one app. I like when apps offer a lot of different activities such as this one does. It is well worth the price off the app when there is more to do with the app than just read the story.
Suggestions
I didn’t see much I would change. As a teacher and mother, I would like to see more skills practiced in game format. As a teacher, I always like to get feedback in the form of a reportcard for the user. This helps me keep track of the skills a student has mastered.
General opinion
I really liked this app for younger children. The story was very engaging. The games were colorful and very academic which would appeal to both preschool teachers, kindergarten teachers, homeschoolers and parents of young children. The videos we engaging as well. Overall I think this app was well the purchase.

I love this app! It is so engaging and interactive. I like how when the kids read it to themselves they can still interact and the words will be spoken if they are touched, I also like the addition of comprehension questions and games at the end for parents and teacher to use.
Suggestions
Honestly nothing jumps out at me. This is such a well thought out app. I am hoping that you make more. It would be nice to have a few different stories in one app. That way there would bbe the ability thread a bunch of stories but not take up so much space for additional apps.
General opinion
Overall a great engaging well thought out app. Readers are able to have the story read to them or read it on their own. The interactive features are fantastic and provider for a lot of visually and tactile interaction. There are also additional games for kids to play and comprehension questions for parents or teaches to use.

This is a great app! I like that there are three ways to read the book. There are a lot of interactions on each page. I liked the mini games as well. They were fun and engaging. The videos were also a plus. There is a lot packed into this app and it’s well worth the price.
Suggestions
There isn’t a lot that I can think of. In the book only section, it would be nice to be able to have the ability to touch a word and have it read to them if they don’t know. I know it’s in the read and play, but parents might want their child to just read it only and it would help with struggling readers to achieve success.
In the paint section, it would be nice to have a fill-in option (how it is now) and a paintbrush option to choose from.
General opinion
This is a great app for Wubbzy fans. There are a lot of interactions throughout the book as well as extras such as videos, painting, and mini games. The book provides three different ways to read it and it is colorful and engaging for children. The questions at the end for the parents to expand on the book and the tie in to the core curriculum is excellent too.

Another great Wubbzy app! I love this story. The colors are bright, and the animations on each page really bring the book to life. The parent questions are a great way to aid in comprehension. The videos and games are great features. I especially liked the bubble shooter game found on one of the pages. I like the different reading levels because it covers a very wide age range.
Suggestions
I think this app is great as is. I would definitely purchase more Wubbzy story apps in the future if they were made the same as this one with the great story line, animations, and games. As far as the audience and goal of this app, it is wonderful.
General opinion
I loved this Wubbzy app. The story is great and perfect for kids. The animations fit with each page and add that little extra to the story. I especially love the dress up page! The parent corner is a great way to help parents ensure the kids are gaining knowledge from the story. The videos and games keep the kids entertained well after they read the story.

I like the simplicity of the app! I love the story and the interactive moments throughout the app! I love that the dog changes its fur with a touch, that the outfits can be changes with a touch, and that animation is incorporated throughout! The voice of the narrator is great. I love the intelligibility and appropriate inflection!
Suggestions
I truly am struggling with things that need improving. I feel like the detail that has been put into this app is fantastic. It might be worth a request of side swiping for page turning. The button pushing is not consistent with other books that are out for purchase, but it isn’t a huge detriment to the enjoyment of the app either.
General opinion
This is a great app with great interactivity in book form. A lot of great skills can be tapped into through this app. Skills like problem solving, foreshadowing, critical thinking, vocabulary building, sequencing, and verbal expression. The simplicity of the app helps the focus remain on what the user intends for it to be, whether that is for educational or entertainment purposes!

This application is not only fun and entertaining to read, the games are educational. Your child is learning while they enjoy reading and playing the games. The read along feature is a great way for the child to be familiarized with the words and sounds. There is 3 features to suit the need of the child and their skill of reading.Being a mom of a special needs child, I like apps that are fun and include the basic skill for problem solving, focusing, visual interactions and following directions. Best of all teaches a moral. This app also includes the common cores.
Suggestions
I would like to see more of a Question and Answer series at the end of the book, more of an interactive session. Have a few questions and multiple choices for the older children. I feel the games should be more geared towards what the book is all about.
General opinion
This application is a well rounded app that enables the child to enjoy reading and learning at the same time. It teaches a moral and is geared toward the child thought process. The app can be used for therapy for special needs children, general education and as a bedtime story.
